Cantilever or centre-post? Choosing the right umbrella typology

Cantilever or centre-post? Choosing the right umbrella typology

Two masts, two philosophies. How seating layout, wind exposure and ground conditions determine which umbrella belongs on your project.

The centre-post umbrella is the workhorse of hospitality shade: one mast, symmetrical canopy, predictable loads and the simplest footing of any typology. If your seating can be planned around a central point, it is almost always the most efficient answer.

The cantilever moves the mast out of the shaded zone entirely. That freedom is invaluable over spas, lounges and circulation routes — but it demands more structure: heavier masts, larger footings and careful attention to the direction of prevailing wind.

Ground conditions often decide the question before aesthetics do. A cantilever over a suspended concrete slab requires engineering coordination early in the build; a centre-post with a base plate can frequently be retrofitted to an existing terrace.

Our advice: plan the furniture layout first, then the umbrella. Shade that does not
